February 29, 2004 ... after February in Bangkok

February 29, 2004 is the eighth anniversary of The House of Corkscrew-Balloon Dot Com!

On this day in 1996, as most of the world was watching Kenya defeat West Indies for the World Cricket Cup, this little spot on the Internet quietly eased its way into existence. Other important events that have happened on February 29 include:

  • 1504: Columbus uses a lunar eclipse to frighten hostile Jamaican Indians
  • 1784: Marquis de Sade transferred from Vincennes fortress to the Bastille
  • 1904: Theodore Roosevelt appoints 7 member committee to study Panama Canal
  • 1956: Islamic Republic established in Pakistan
  • 1960: The first Playboy Club, featuring bunnies, opens in Chicago
  • 1960: JFK makes "missile gap" the Presidential campaign issue
  • 1964: Frank Rugani sets badminton shuttlecock distance record, 24.3 meters
  • 1968: US ends regular flights with nuclear bombs
  • 1980: Michael Bracey ends 59 hours 55 minutes trapped in an elevator, England
  • 1988: NYC Mayor Koch calls Reagan a "WIMP" in the war on drugs
  • 2000: Alf flies from Florida to Bangkok

The last of these events, having occurred after the establishment of THOCBDC, is fully covered in these pages. You're on your own regarding the other events, since they took place during the "dark ages."

In honor of THOCBDC's eighth birthday (or its second one, if you count February 29ths that way), you might want to revisit some of the journals that have been written by our talented "guest writers" over the years:

The "gaps" between the various guest journals are filled by the regular Alf journals!

We don't have the very first version of THOCBDC, but we have preserved one from November of its first year ... back in the days of the "bead of sweat" girl and the "wings" girls. You can find more historical snapshots at the Internet's "Wayback Machine."

On its eighth birthday, THOCBDC has a total of 5554 web "pages." If you could print each one on a regular sheet of paper and lay them end to end, they would extend more than one mile. (But of course most of the web "pages" are longer and would print to several sheets of paper each. We leave the actual printing and laying task as an exercise for the reader.) There are also 21,512 graphic images here, primarily photos. In the course of its life, THOCBDC's traffic has grown from a trickle to a torrent. We welcome you all!

Please keep visiting in the weeks, months and years to come: A lot more excitement lies ahead!
