Today Watcharee and I visited Pom's home on a very sad occasion. Her brother died two days ago and he will be cremated tomorrow. He was only 43 years old. Pom and Golf are now preparing cremation tokens that will be given to those who come to the cremation.
After witnessing a cremation people who are not relatives of the deceased are given a small piece of red string to attach to the door handle of their home. This is to prevent the spirit of the deceased from making an unfriendly visit. This is not a Buddhist belief; rather it is a Chinese-Thai belief ... one that is heavily infused with the power of Spirits. Just to be safe we ... well, as you can see ... 1

A few days ago the northern provinces of Uttradit and Phrae were hit with heavy rains that caused numerous mudslides resulting in the destruction of 555 homes. Now that water is sweeping its way toward Bangkok at a terrific pace. The government says that the current dams and reservoirs will keep flooding in Bangkok to a minimum. But, not everyone is so sanguine. And, the monsoon season has not even started.
