Bangkok, February 2009

After January

I love exploring Bangkok. Even when I return to familiar places I always find new things. Today, to kill some time before an appointment, I revisited Baan Silom which is a newish-mini mall on Silom Road. Where once sat a nondescript shop (no wonder it is gone) there now stands a working Saxophone Society where saxophone players can practice with different instruments in mini-rooms (one of my pix shows the backs of two heads blowing away, albeit through a window.....well, not actually blowing through a window; the camera was on the other side of the glass).

Also, what was once a tiny walk-up hotel ... the Heritage Baan Silom ... has now taken over an entire building at Baan Silom.

And ... and I have mixed feelings about this ... one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants has changed nationalities; it is now Lebonese. Hey, I like both cuisines. It is a pity that they could not just share kitchens.

Something really BIG is happening at the Plaza Athenee hotel.

The residence of the American ambassador to Thailand is on the other side of Wireless Road from us. His swimming pool facilities are visually sandwiched between the Plaza Athenee hotel and the Athenee Office Building. With an 18mm lens it appears to be just a dot. But, as the camera's "mm"s grow so do his pool chairs.

Actually, I think this pool and the adjacent house, though on the embassy grounds, are not the things that the ambassador uses. His home is about 50 meters to the left (its view blocked by the Athenee Office Building). What I am showing you is probably a guest house. (*)

(*) If Obama visits Bangkok will he stay at the guest house ... or, will be book a hotel room as Bush did? How about Secretary of State Clinton. At the guest house or at The Oriental Hotel? Remember, M. Albright ... the Secretary of State under Clinton (or, was it Bush 41?) {**} ... took over the penthouse suite at The Oriental much to the annoyance of guests.

{**} My history is getting rough around the edges.

Though our garage is pretty bare, our food is plentiful.

The little round bars are Issan sausages. The rest needs no words.

Driving around our neighborhood on some new streets.
